2 more tasting roadtrips coming up. Durban, Joburg...
Posted on September 20, 2011 by Pieter Walser
For many years I’ve been presenting tastings to private clients. It’s always been core to my business - getting face-time with people who love wine. I am not exactly sure what happened in the last few months, but the tastings took on new momentum. I subsequently decided to formalize the planning of trips. I am setting aside one week in a month where I’ll commit to travelling and presenting tastings. The past 2 months have been Joburg’s turn and this month I am off to Bloemfontein and Kimberly. A new city that I am excited about is Durban. I'm temporarily booked for a week trip there in October, but still have plenty open nights (17 to 21 October 2011). You see, I can surf in the day and present tastings at night - not possible in Joburg! But don’t worry Joburg. I still love your city and will be there 26-29 October. I also have a few open nights there.
This is where I need your help. Please let me know if you would like to host an event like this. You will need to invite people/friends/colleagues/clients/friends of friends, in short, people who love wine and want to have some fun, open up your house (or find an alternative venue) and I will be the entertainment. I’ll bring the wine and glasses, present a tasting on the BLANKbottle wines now selling. We could taste anything between 7 and 10 different wines on the night. I have my own style when presenting these tastings. You see, BLANKbottle is a mere bottle imitation of myself and my life up to now. I’ll tell you everything, yes, everything! My life before and my journey within wine. The lows and the highs with the wine as your tour guide. If you understand where I come from, you"ll understand BLANKbottle.
Most nights start out quite respectably with everyone on best behaviour, but it normally ends in a radical, chaotic fashion. Some nights even start chaotic, like the other evening in Bryanston, and later completely goes off the rails. It’s about having fun, being honest and learning about wine and making it a part of your life - simply enjoying it without the pressure.
See again below the 2 weeks planned:
17 October 2011 – DURBAN – Still open
18 October 2011 – DURBAN – Still open
19 October 2011 – DURBAN – Still open
20 October 2011 – DURBAN – Still open
21 October 2011 – DURBAN - BOOKED FOR TASTING in Umhlanga
26 October 2011 – JOBURG – Still open
27 October 2011 – JOBURG – BOOKED FOR TASTING in Westcliff
28 October 2011 – JOBURG – Still open
29 October 2011 – JOBURG – Still open
30 October 2011 – JOBURG - Still open
To book a night e-mail me: pieter@blankbottle.co.za - If these nights don’t work for you please book a date in advance that could and we can plan things from there.
I look forward to hearing from you!

No shine but wine!
Posted on March 21, 2011 by Pieter Walser
Although this is an out-of-competition-post I would like to take the opportunity to a) stay in contact and b) share the experience I had when visiting Lanrust Farm.Living in Germany and planning a vacation in South Africa in November 2010, we read an article in STERN magazine (the biggest weekly in Germany) about an interesting winemaker nearby Somerset West with an unlike idea for his products. In those stories the words "different", "peculiar"and "a young wild" are a must-be-ingredient in today's wine columns but this guy was was truely special and our curiosity was provoked.
So my wife Bettina managed to get an appointment for the two of us with Pieter during our stay in South Africa and after having cruised a moderately maintaind farm lane, meeting some very helpful and friendly locals in order to put us back on track we made it to the home of BLANKbottle. We already had six or seven wine tastings before in the area and very soon we learned that here it was in fact "different". No shine but wine!
The upcoming two hours of wine experience changed our approach to it completely. Pieter lead us deep into the world of viniculture and we were really carried away by his enthusiasm and his love for wine. Listening to his philosophy was irresistable and contagious leaving us with the problem that BLANKbottle is still only available for the chosen ones living in South Africa. Until now, but we're hopefull (Pieter, thanks for the good news!).Ahm, yes. A song of praise but really something I wanted to say!
All the best to you and for your plans for Europe (very selfish!)
best regards
Bettina & Guido

It was great to arrive in Sedgefield with 12 bottles of Blankbottel awaiting consumption and enjoyment!
Posted on January 5, 2011 by Pieter Walser
Firstly happy new year for 2011, I hope it is blessed with great grape growing conditions and easy pickings. It was great to arrive in Sedgefield with 12 bottles of Blankbottel awaiting consumption and enjoyment! First time I got into the educational range, the Grenache was great my wife loved it. Very accessible and certainly different on the palate. My favourite was Batavia. The White Black was enjoyed on Christmas day with marinated grilled prawns, a top wine and with the structure to support the rich food. We enjoyed a glass or two without food to fully appreciate the winemakers effort.
Looking forward to your offerings for this year!

Carl

as long as U know that the star ratings in Platters are often subjective, then U know how to use Platters
Posted on November 23, 2010 by Pieter Walser
CONGRATULATIONS on well deserved recognition for all the work and passion U put into producing those stunning wines and the ones still to be released.Platters has supporters and detractors but in my opinion any winemaker worth his salt cannot afford not to be in Platters. If one picks up a bottle with a label that is unfamiliar, there is only one place to find information and contact details and as long as U know that the star ratings in Platters are often subjective, then U know how to use Platters.

The only problem I have with moment of silence...
Posted on November 18, 2010 by Pieter Walser

The only problem I have with moment of silence is that it is too good. I have served it at a few dinner parties and it has been enjoyed way too much by our guests. Everybody has
commented on what a great wine it is and have unfortunately for me enjoyed it too much and in the process rapidly depleted the small stock I ordered from you. I therefore would like to order another 2 cases please.
Regards, Wayne

BLACK 2008 - "Man oh man oh man..."
Posted on October 22, 2010 by Pieter Walser

Posted on October 22, 2010 by Pieter Walser

Posted on October 22, 2010 by Pieter Walser
Ons sal definitief by jou begin wyn koop.

Yo Vineyard Gringo
Sorry for the delay…had a laptop problem so for more than a week, had internet and email solitude…what bliss….but what catch up.
Shit, how was the football… a month of too much wine, chips, biltong and some amazing skills.Your boet…what a talent…what a great video. I loved the photo collection idea.
The face morphing sequences gave a good history of Pieter…who he is, that irrespective of changes the core still stays true….from clean shaven innocence to breaded maturity.
What I did miss was Pieter the stoetgat…the twinkle in the eye…the let’s get up to some mischief visuals.
And I think you could have carried on with the voice over. Once we got to the cellar shots the voice had disappeared. I wanted to hear more,( following the visuals) your philosophy on how you tackled the cellar process, how you sold yourself to an audience, what you had to offer in the wines, etc.Great visuals, funky editing, appropriate music and relevant script… shit hot video…well done to the Walser boys.
Nice one Bru

Tilla - 17 uit moontlike 20 punte
Posted on June 15, 2010 by Pieter Walser
Is dit so?
Beste wyngroete

Pity you have not reached the UK

Secondly, I'm a marketing consultant, and as such I love the way you're raising my interest and then grabbing my contact details and now you're talking directly to me - a converted customer!
Brilliant idea.

Feedback from my clients
Posted on October 3, 2009 by Pieter Walser
After telling my clients about the Woolies deal, I received massive feedback. See below:
WHY NOT HERMANUS WOOLWORTH? Congratulations and we will look out for your wine - pity we have to drive over the pass to get some!!Well done!!
Great news about Woolworths putting your wine on their shelves, All glory to God. Love to hear the story behind the deal.
Boet it is huge. I know you want to keep it personal, but linking with Woolies is a serious deal. Now you have to balance how to keep being a rock star with being a corporate winner! A good prospect to have. Congrats again mate.
"Congrats, Pieter. Wel gedaan. Jy verdien die sukses met jou fantastiese wyne! Up, up and away from here on out."
Thank you for your email, and congratulations! May you go from strength to strength. Blessings to you all,
Awesome news and a great Congratulations to go with it.
Good for you! I will try Woolies and order again soon!
Well done and congrats! Still wish you would get a heavy chardonnay in your range!
CONGRATULATIONS !!! this is absolutely wonderful (even if the 'chosen ones' will now have to share the secret). I will definitely get some at Woolworths. Congrats once again & let it run...right in the bottles..
Just spent 30 minutes on Youtube catching up on your videos. LOVE DIT! Ek’s nou so dors vir ‘n glasie… as ek net nie swanger was nie… hmmmm! Congratulations
Lekke lekke
Congratulations Pieter. ‘Way to go!
ALEXA and BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN will soon be house guests.
Mixed feelings about this. Great that Woolworths have given you the nod but hopefully they aren't going to kill it with the price. Would be nice if Waterstone was added to your list? Enjoyed your article in weekend paper, good review.
Carel het jou woolies-mail na my toe aangestuur, my kaak sleep oppie grond rond! Sjoe sjoe sjoe, kyk net die Here se guns oor jou lewe, dude! Wou net seg – well done! En as dit enigsins vir jou iets beteken – ek’s geensins ‘n wynvlieg nie, carel kry my baaaaja stadig inie rooiwyndinge in, mar na ek jou Spaniard geproe het, was ek helemal hooked :) Baie blessings vir jou en A enni kids, kyk mooi na julself,
First off would like to congratulate you on getting Blankbottle into Woolies, I know a very hard thing to get as I have had previous clients who also went down the line.
wow, pieter, dis amazing!!!
BAIE BAIE geluk, dis great om te sien hoe die Here jou besigheid en passie seën! ons moet plan maak vir 'n kuiertjie een of ander tyd...
I just wanted to say Congratulations.
I will be running off to Woolies ASAP.
Congratulations Pieter, hope this turns out to be something very big for you.
Excellent news!! Congratulations. Looking forward to picking up the vino at the local woolies!
Pieter congrats.U must be very proud of yourself. Enjoy. Love
Wow!! Dit is fantastiese nuus! A big congratulations to you! What an achievement! Enjoy every moment of your fame!
EPIC!!!!!!!!
Baie geluk!
Pieter you are truly blessed, this is a positive coup! Your brand has done so incredibly well, it just seems to go from strength to strength! God is great!!!
Well done! Baie opgewonde v julle!
You're a legend. Watched you from the start (Bus Warriors), great to see you cooking. "Always paddle out!"
Congratulations on this achievement. It must be a great step for you. I however feel a bit sad. It feels like 'our family' will now be everybody's business! Hehehehehe..... Will the price be affected? Is Woolworths pushing the price up and will these wines still be available directly from you without the markup? Or is part of the deal with Woolies that those botles will only be available through them? Just wondering.
Congratulations. This is no doubt a testament to your passion and skill as a wine maker. Even though they are a big corporation it is no doubt a feather in your cap! Well done. I will go and source a bottle of the Boss this afternoon.
Hoop besigheid kom so in vir jou.
Baie geluk Pieter.
Absolutely fantastic news! Love your short films!!! Love the Parlotones and good compliment to your wine films, both unique. I am sure that I will be one of the first purchasing your wines from Woolies. Still waiting to get Giant Mistake on the shelves but I suppose it will be worth the wait!
Congratulations, Pieter
I still remember you personally delivering my box of wine on a very hot day!
Congratulations Pieter, what a big feather in your cap. I am looking forward to our next trip to PE and a visit to Woolies in Greenacers, unfortunately our Woolies in Port Alfred does not have a wine section (yet).
Congratulations – we are sure to support you via the Woolworths avenue – well done!
Well done Spooksters!
That is absolutely AWESOME!!!!! Congratulations! And best of all, my tiny local woolies is on the list. May you continue from strength to strength.

I rememer like yesterday sitting around the dining room.......
Posted on January 23, 2009 by Pieter Walser
My old man just forwarded me one of your emails (to boast that he was being sent wine by you to sample). So I thought I'd have a quick look at your website to see how things are going, and ... well, I'm totally astounded.
I rememer like yesterday sitting around the dining room table at the Eksteens' house in Erinvale, when all you had were some unlabled bottles and a cheeky idea. To think that in the short space of time since then you have turned it into such a success is nothing short of inspiring. The webiste, the visa partnership, the press coverage and the award, it's all just so impressive.
Now I'm sure that behind the glossy vineer it has been nothing but hard work, and I know you've hit plenty of obstacles. But to an outsider like me, that only makes it more of an achievement to admire. So well done dude. I really hope it goes from strength to strength for you.
All the best to you, Aneen and Luca. And happy 2009!
Richard

favourable comments
Posted on October 31, 2008 by Pieter Walser
I never ever got back to you regarding the wine-tasting I held a few weeks ago. All the members commented on the fine taste of the wines we tasted. The wine most liked was the Sauvignon Blanc 2006. On Sunday I had a few friends around and we cracked 2 bottles of the Walser Malan Alliance. Everybody, and that was 5 of us who had it, had very favourable comments on the wine. It was great.
Have a great day.

Posted on October 31, 2008 by Pieter Walser
Congratulations on your birthday!
I opened my last bottle of the Kah-Shah(??) last week, when out to dinner with friends – it was awesome! This had to be followed of course, by an explanation of Blank bottle. Also still got a few bottles of the Mystery wine from the end of last year – that is very pleasant to drink.
Anyway, here’s to lots more happy imbibing with Blank bottle!

Can I bring along my mountain bike and cycle with you?
Posted on September 5, 2008 by Pieter Walser
Hi Pieter,
I just loved the video!!!! A GREAT idea!
Can I bring along my mountain bike and cycle with you? But I have a GT Zascar
I think this idea of taking us up to the vineyards and tasting the wine and giving us some idea of what you taste is fantastic
Now I may even get my wife going up to the computer. She always gets frustrated in not knowing immediately what wine we are drinking - but thats the funRecently I went to a wine tasting and two of the guests a wife and her husband were very eloquent about the wines, being able to taste the different varietals that made up the blends saying the one must have been an older wine! I was very impressed, until one of the bottles we tasted was corked and this was not spotted!!
VERY easy tasting when one is able to read the label
One day we will meet and share a bottle of winebest of luck with this project!!
Apparently you know a colleague of mine and he mentioned the "movie" Now I understand.

Great Wines, Great people!!!!!

I try to present as many wine tasting events as possible. The client provides the venue as well as the crowd. I supply the wine. See some photos on recent tastings.
At Ian and Tina Trail’s house I met influential people, enjoyed excellent Goulash, wine and the best Chocolate mouse I’ve tasted in South Africa.

Winetasting Joburg - Ian Trail
Posted on May 26, 2008 by Pieter Walser
Some years ago, Peter C. introduced us to Blank Bottle, a small selection of wines made and offered for sale by Pieter Walser, a young, very enthusiastic wine maker from Stellenbosch. He only sells from his website, or direct e-mails, and sends out a regular interesting e-mail about something that he is currently doing. One such e-mail said that he would be in Jhb. for a two week period, and he was offering a free wine tasting to any of his customers in the big smoke....
My wife, Tina, and I jumped onto the idea, put together 34 of our close friends, made a Big pot of Hungarian Goulash....to ward off the cold, and a ratatouille, followed with a decedent chocolate mousse (that is fast becoming famous), and had Pieter and his helper, Louis, entertain us through the evening with eight wonderful wines that he had brought with him! We finally packed up at about 01:30 Saturday morning...everyone leaving with a goody bag of two of the wines, and some of Tina’s awesome bath products, covered by the R120 per person that we charged to guarantee attendance! I believe that everyone had had a great evening!
I can happily say that Pieter walked out at least 15 customers richer, one of which may turn into some sort of corporate contract....after having an interesting, interactive and fun evening! The total investment to him was about 24 bottles of wine at cost, and some transport costs!!! What a successful marketing method for his very good product!!
For anyone interested, Pieter’s web site is: http://www.blankbottle.co.za

Just wanted to thank you for a wonderful evening – we enjoyed your company thoroughly and we were very grateful that you were polite enough not to spit our wine out!!!
We’ve always enjoyed your wine and I believe that in order to truly enjoy a wine it is important to know and understand the winemaker. We look forward to your next releases.
I will send you some pics over the weekend that document the wonderful adventure we have had so far with our wine making – in years to come I am sure we will improve.
Kind regards from all of us from the Great Oaks (St. Andrews) winery!

Great meeting you and a most enjoyable conversation.

The wine was delivered on Friday. Haven't had a chance to sample any yet but thought I'd tell you that the level of service I've experienced with this transaction is by far the highest I have encountered on the web or in a bricks and mortar establishment.
Unless the wine is awfull, which I very much doubt, you will definitely be hearing from us again.

Posted on May 3, 2007 by Pieter Walser
Hi Pieter,
Have rec’d the two cases of BACK TJ and LUCA and have sampled both , twice, and so feedback time.
These are anything but “unpretentious” wines. They are both excellent and, to my well trained taste buds, the Luca has a slight. only slight edge over the TJ. I am very delighted with the wine and will certainly be ordering further in the future.
Well done on an excellent product at drinkable prices.
Best regards, Vernon.

Many thanks for the great wine and the super efficient delivery service.

I have found a haven of superiority....
Posted on March 16, 2007 by Pieter Walser
Dear Pieter
I am simply full of **** when it gets to wine - especially reds. I ordered a variety of your wines, LUCA (my sisters 2nd one's name), 747 and GRAPHE. Each one with an enormously individual character, and certainly with a distinctive twist of a careful winemakers care.
I have attended garagiste meetings, attempted my own wine, and consider myself as a novice wine expert! I taste what I can, and drink what's good...I drink mainly BLANKbottle.
After many years of searching for decent character wines at a decent price, I have found a haven of superiority....BLANKbottle is certainly it! Keep an eye open for my next order.
With all good wishes

Service!!!!
Posted on February 23, 2007 by Pieter Walser
Hi Pieter,
I just wanted to tell you how impressed I have been with not only the wines you sent me, but with the entire interaction process with your company.
I first heard of you through Pete's Weekly; then a friend of mine had some of your wine at a celebration (he is also a Pete's Weekly subscriber). I was so impressed with the wine that I placed an order with you a few days later - then forgot all about it.
3 days later, I got home to find my wine waiting for me. I am staying with a friend and there was some confusion, as I had forgotten to tell the domestic to expect a delivery - and she didn't know my surname. Despite this, between her and the delivery company they sorted it out, much to my relief.
Although it was not the same wine I had tasted at my friend, it was equally as good! Thank you very much for a great product and a great service.
Regards,
Veronica Haupt

An excellent blend,
Posted on January 6, 2006 by Pieter Walser
Having left the wine to settle down after its journey to Joburg, there is no doubt that you are on a winner. Really very enjoyable, an excellent blend, although Cab is my true passion…maybe that’s your next opportunity. If so, please reserve me a case…!
The very best of luck to your venture. I am sure you are swamped with e-mails, but only justified. Good luck to you and your team…
Roger
